Johannesburg (South Africa) EFC AFRICA 15, presented by MusclePharm, will feature two title fights! In addition to the light heavyweight championship between Norman Wessels and JP Joubert, 27 July will see the eagerly anticipated middleweight championship rematch between current champion Jeremy ‘Pitbull’ Smith and former champion Garreth ‘Soldierboy’ McLellan.
McLellan is fresh off a second round submission victory against Danie van Heerden at EFC AFRICA 14, and is now ready to wage war to reclaim the title that Smith took away.
“I’m happy to have this shot and I’ll be even happier once I’ve won the belt,” says McLellan. “I brought the old Soldierboy back for the fight with Danie and he’s staying for the title fight. I’ve realised that Jeremy is a tough, durable athlete that’s capable of going the distance and that’s how he ekes out the win in a lot of his fights. To deal with that, I’m coming in more aggressively and I’m a lot more positive about my approach. I’ve still got a lot of hard work to do, starting now, but at the end of the day I’m a better all-round fighter and I possess the skills to beat the best and get the belt back.”
Smith has been champion since defeating McLellan in their first epic encounter at EFC AFRICA 12 in March. For 15 minutes it seemed the fight could go either way, but Smith locked in a guillotine choke in the opening minute of round four to become champion. “It’s going to be a good one,” says Smith. “This is a fight that a lot of people want and I’m looking forward to facing Garreth again, I just hope he doesn’t spend three rounds running away from me like he did last time. Garreth, don’t make me chase you down on 27 July, let’s get in there and fight and give the fans what they want to see!”
EFC AFRICA 15 takes place at the Carnival City Big Top Arena on 27 July. Tickets on sale at Computicket www.computicket.com and tickets for the live broadcast to Nu Metro Cinemas available at www.numetro.co.za. The three main card bouts will be broadcast live across Africa on e.tv, starting at 22h30 CAT. Full event streamed live online.
