Johannesburg (South Africa) – EFC AFRICA is proud to announce the new signing of bantamweight Marino Cutendana, the fellow Angolan who first introduced MMA to legendary featherweight champion Demarte Pena. Cutendana’s first and biggest test in EFC AFRICA is against the dangerous Buirski brother Mathew Buirski, Cutendana’s teammate who is also making his EFC AFRICA debut on June 27.
Cutendana is an Angolan Muay Thai fighter with a record of 4-0 and a pro MMA record of 1-0. His martial arts journey began with current EFC AFRICA featherweight champion Demarte Pena when both were still at school.
“It was Marino that introduced me to MMA,” says the champion. “He showed me UFC tapes and then put an armbar on me! I was hooked from then on.”
Cutendana and Pena started their own informal MMA club while in high school, teaching themselves mixed martial arts during break time and after school, and holding underground tournaments amongst their school friends.
MMA and Angola are extremely important to both fighters. They are to leave on a trip to the country on Sunday, May 19, where they will be holding seminars at various clubs and promoting the sport on national television.
“He’s the champ,” says Cutendana. “Now that we are both in EFC AFRICA we can promote the sport there. People are hungry for knowledge in Angola. We grew up tough in Angola. The sport is in our blood.”
Cutendana is currently training out of Jacques Rossouw’s Wrestling for MMA gym as well as joining Pena for sparring sessions at his club, Fight Fit Militia, on Fridays and Saturdays. He has had his sights set on joining the EFC AFRICA organisation since 2011 but always found himself too light to compete at featherweight. With the introduction of the bantamweight division he is finally able to compete at his optimum weight.
“It’s a huge honour to be a part of EFC AFRICA,” he says. “June 27 can’t come soon enough.”
“I’ve decided to leave my camp at Wrestling for MMA for this fight,” says Buirski. “Training with the guy you’re fighting with is difficult.” “Marino’s standup is good,” adds Buirski, “he’s fast, but he’s not powerful. I don’t feel he has the skills to match me.”
