Disability Cover For Athletes

ONEPLAN & EFC AFRICA strike landmark deal

Johannesburg (South Africa) – A goal set at the inception of the EFC AFRICA organisation has finally been reached. ONEPLAN Health Insurance and EFC AFRICA today announce a partnership that will provide disability cover for athletes injured at EFC AFRICA events.

“This is an absolutely groundbreaking moment for us,” said EFC AFRICA president Cairo Howarth. We’ve been working towards this since EFC AFRICA 01.”

Howarth and his team have made numerous attempts to partner with various insurance providers, but have never been able to penetrate the false perception that exists around the sport of MMA.

“There’s an idea out there that MMA is simply too violent, simply too much of a risk,” said Howarth. “Despite educating people about the facts, that MMA is actually far safer than other combat or full contact sports such as boxing and even rugby, we haven’t found a provider open minded enough to get involved, until now.”

ONEPLAN Health Insurance is a provider whose business principles lie firmly in the provision of healthcare at affordable rates. ONEPLAN offers their clients a pre-paid mobile process which pays the clients claims before they see their practitioners. The development and operation of all One Health products are firmly underpinned by a culture of innovation and a desire to put healthcare in the hands of more South Africans.

‘With ONEPLAN Health Insurance, EFC AFRICA have found a partner that understands our sport, understands our athletes, and are not only willing but excited to get involved,” said Howarth.

The current partnership means coverage for any athlete competing at an EFC AFRICA event that sustains a debilitating injury. Athletes will receive a lump sum paid out immediately, as well as an additional monthly sum for the period of a year.

“This partnership is all about the well-being of our athletes,” said Howarth. “There are very few combat sport promotions anywhere in the world that offer this sort of facility.”

“This is a truly exciting milestone for both ONEPLAN Health Insurance and EFC AFRICA. For us it’s a golden opportunity to partner with a likeminded group of people willing to do the work necessary to look after their stakeholders,” said Michael Otten, the managing director of ONEPLAN.

“Increasing the reach of health insurance products, putting them into the hands of people who have previously been excluded from this kind of cover requires a dedicated effort. We look forward to expanding the coverage offered to EFC AFRICA’s athletes,’ he added.

The partnership between ONEPLAN and EFC AFRICA is seen as a first step, with many advances in terms of athlete care planned for the future.

“ONEPLAN are a young, innovative company, just like ourselves,” said Howarth. “They have a huge list of fantastic products, which we will be looking at adding to our partnership to further benefit our athletes in the future.”
