‘Bam Bamz’ Wants Power

D. Hawkey excited about heavier fights

Johannesburg (South Africa) – On July 03 the legendary Donavin ‘Bam Bamz’ Hawkey re-enters the Hexagon, this time fighting in the bigger, light heavyweight division.

A long time middleweight campaigner, Hawkey has made the decision to move based on maximizing power.

“I’m excited about entering the light heavyweight division, mostly because of the strength training I’ll be able to continue,” he said in an interview today. “In the past I had to shed a lot of the power I’m capable of.”

“This is a different challenge,” he continued. “I haven’t fought out of welterweight in a while. The guys I’ll be fighting are going to be bigger and more powerful. I can’t wait.”

Hawkey will be up against Pretoria’s Ian Visser, a man also entering the light heavyweights for the first time.

Visser has battled heavyweight champion Andrew van Zyl previously, as well as current number one contender Christophe Walravens. With the drop in weight he will be piling on the speed, while the tight regimen to make the gradual cut will be upping his stamina also.

The bout between Hawkey and Visser takes place on the EFC 31 prelim card, exclusively available live at the venue, or on the #EFCBigScreen experience, in HD, at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas throughout South Africa.

EFC 31, presented by BetXchange.com, returns to the Coca-Cola Dome, Johannesburg, on Thursday 03 July 2014. Tickets on sale at www.computicket.com.
