Johannesburg, South Africa – International Mandela Day falls on July 18. In South Africa it is seen as a day with a difference. Nelson Mandela was in public office for 67 years, therefore South Africans give back to those less fortunate by donating 67 minutes of their time. This Mandela Day EFC athletes and personalities got involved.
Preparing for his featherweight championship fight on August 19, Pierre Botha spoke to EFC about his life changing community outreach experience.
“Mine and my family’s 67 minutes turned into 5 hours of giving back to our community, where we drove around to see if we could help a few people in need,” said Botha. “It broke my heart to see how many people are struggling. Some of the people we encountered have no roof over their head, no warm clothing, no bed and no food. Some hadn’t eaten in three to four days. One young lady explained to us how they had to learn how to make a fire and cook whatever they could over it without any pot. I feel the need to give more to them and so I will continue to help this community until they find their feet.”
Durban’s Amanda Lino, EFC female flyweight champion, teamed up with Pinc organization and Sheet Street for the day. They went to Christ Miracles crèche in Waterloo where they got to spend quality time playing, spoiling and building relationships with the children there. Lino brought big smiles to many faces this Mandela Day.
Shortly after his victory at EFC 61 in Sun City, welterweight Pietie Coxen was also spotted giving back. In Lambton, Johannesburg, he took to the streets with his Thunder MMA pupils. Coxen and the kids had collected food items in the week leading up to the 18th of July, and then spent their 67 minutes distributing to many homeless members of society. Afterward Coxen commented that himself and Thunder MMA feel blessed to have been a part of this day.
Anneen Mangiagalli, EFC hex-side manager, spent the afternoon at Ruimsig Vet where she assisted in the rehabilitation of some of the abandoned animals. Two specific rescue dogs, Queen Grace and Princess Alice, thoroughly enjoyed the love and human touch that Anneen had to share.
These are just a few of the many inspiring stories that we have to share. EFC is proud of the athletes and personalities who are making an impact in the South African community.
