When & why did you start martial arts training?
I started in 2013 with kickboxing and light MMA just to keep fit, I was introduced to it by fellow doctors at work but it then became part of my routine
How did you transition to MMA?
I met and trained with one of Warren Allison’s students, Marnu Basson in Kimberley while I was doing my Zuma year. He suggested I try it because I gave him a hard time on the mats. So I eventually did and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
What achievements do you hold?
I scored the North American Grappling Association Gold medal for female beginners under 70kg… I still see that as one of my best achievements because I truly did not know as many ground techniques and concepts that I now know today and I battled till my arms gave out against an equally strong opponent to win that one. Most recently, I won the first women’s MFC title.
How did you get your fight name?
I’m a “bone dokotela” who’s fond of anime including Avatar (The Air bender) and I love jiu-jitsu where you get to ‘bend bones’… it all just came together.
Who is your hero and why?
My mother for being the strongest women I know, and clearly the reason for my natural athleticism (sorry dad).
What is your favourite technique?
Any choke… specifically triangle concepts. You either tap or nap and it avoids the snap.
What other interesting info can you tell us about yourself?
I love investing in myself and those around me. I’m doing orthopaedic surgery. I love anime, playing guitar, reading all sorts, and teaching white belts (especially our ladies, I’m trying to help grow bjj in that division).
What does it mean for you to fight in the EFC?
It’s a great platform to truly test my chosen art and push myself to my peak. I’m super excited to see how it goes!
