Fight Preperation?
I train 6 days a week, everything from boxing to Jits, GI and no GI, and a lot of strength and conditioning.
When & why did you start martial arts training?
I started martial arts in Brazil. I learned karate, boxing and Muay Thai first, then MMA was a natural progression. My early fights were in Brazil, and were more live street fights than the MMA we know today. Iām talking no rules, no gloves, no time limit, no medic!
How and why did you transition to MMA?
I was being bullied at school and joined Shaughn Vos who has been my coach to-date. I found I had a knack for fighting and have trained full time ever since.
What ranks & titles have you held?
National Champion in Jiu Jitsu, and have provincial colours for wrestling. I was CFL lightweight champion.
Favoured technique?
I’m a showy guy and I must say anything goes.
Who is your hero, and why?
Wanderlei Silva, because I look like him and we both have no fear.
MMA highlights and international experience?
I fought for PRIDE in Japan. My fight against Takanori Gomi (current UFC fighter) was the first lightweight fight at PRIDE, and took place in front of 50 000 people. I lived in Japan for 6 months training with MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba. I also lived at renowned MMA gym Chute Boxe in Brazil for 6 years. That is where I got the name āLittle Wanderleiā because my style was very much like Wanderlei Silvaās and many people compared us. It was great to train with the best in the world and have Wanderlei, Shogun and Ninja in my corner for my fights.
What other interesting information can you tell us about yourself?
I like to surf. I came to Cape Town a few years ago after contacting Mike Mouneimne from PFA. I wanted to visit another beautiful city, and once I was here I fell in love with it.
