Fighters Biography
When and why did you start MMA?
I first was exposed to MMA when the UFC started gaining popularity, about 1994. From then on, Karate didn’t seem quite enough for me and I tried to work in a few new techniques until I got banned regularly from karate training and competitions for excessive contact. I kept my martial arts going but my main focus throughout my 20s and early 30s was work. In May 2010 I was heavily involved in bodybuilding, but it hit me that I’d rather be all show and all go, so I decided to dedicate myself to MMA. I had one amateur MMA fight against Graham Gordon at the AFL. My opponent was substantially larger than me; he was 6ft5 and 112kg. After the fight I didn’t have a scratch on me. My opponent couldn’t walk for two weeks.
Switching gyms in 2011:
My family and I moved from Ballito to Centurion towards the end of 2011. I now train at Crazy Monkey Centurion under Jacques Wagner. I’ve known Jacques for a few years and Crazy Monkey is a perfect fit for me. They have a very intelligent approach to fighting, very different from the ‘hulk smash’ approach, and I’ve found I can relate to their methods. My strength and conditioning is now being done with William Ainslie, a certified strength and conditioning coach
