“I Want To Beat Him Up, I Want To Make Him Hurt”
Van Staden responds to Opperman ahead of EFC AFRICA 19
03 April 2013
Johannesburg (South Africa) - At EFC AFRICA 19 Michiel Opperman will defend his welterweight title against Martin ‘The Punisher’ Van Staden, an occasion that sees Africa’s two greatest welterweight warriors do battle.
“Winning that belt means everything to me,” says Martin Van Staden in a behind the scenes training camp video released today. “At the end of every day I’m a better athlete than I was this morning… We are going to dictate.”
“If they think Martin’s only got an overhand right,” says Van Staden’s coach, Richie Quan, “there’s going to be big wakeup call on the night.”
In Opperman’s video, released last week, the Team CIT camp suggested that they would be looking to keep the fight standing and were unafraid of Van Staden’s stand-up prowess. “They’re trying to put my game off,” says Van Staden in response. “If they do keep it standing, thumbs up, someone’s going to get knocked out and it won’t be me.”
“I’m going to show him no respect,” he adds, “no mercy. I want to beat him up. I want to make him hurt. I’m going to inflict as much pain and damage as I can.”
