Potts To Face Hassan At EFC AFRICA 21
Hawkey out, Allen to face Taljaard
02 July 2013
Johannesburg (South Africa) - Ruan Potts, the former EFC AFRICA heavyweight champion, will face Egypt’s power punching Mahmoud ‘Hellboy’ Hassan in a main card bout that adds more big hitters to a card already stacked with heavies. Wesley ‘Young Assassin’ Hawkey has pulled off the EFC AFRICA 21 fight card due to personal reasons opening the way for Pretoria tough man Markus Taljaard, keen to redeem his recent loss, to step in to face Boyd Allen in his biggest test yet.
Ruan Potts was scheduled to face Ricky Misholas at EFC AFRICA 20 but the fight fight suffered a late cancellation due to a hand injury to Misholas. Potts was promised a makeup fight by EFC AFRICA president Cairo Howarth and this is it. Hellboy Hassan is a fighter much in the mould of Misholas, a standup specialist with incredible punching power. Hassan bested Misholas at EFC AFRICA 13 and will be looking to do much as Misholas was, KO the versatile former heavyweight champion before he has a chance to take the battle to the ground.
“Hellboy is the perfect opponent for Potts,” says Howarth. “The threat he brings with his fists is huge. In terms of what fans were hoping for in seeing Potts vs. Misholas, this is it, and then some.”
“I am currently going through a separation,” says Hawkey on his withdrawal from the EFC AFRICA 21 card. “With all the personal pressure I have not been able to train to the levels I need to in order to give Boyd a great fight. Looking at my situation honestly I knew it was better to pull out now and give another fighter the chance.”
Allen is frustrated at the choice of his new opponent. “I’m putting everything on the line to fight guys that haven’t worked to get where I’ve got,” he said. “I destroyed Alain [Ilunga], I nearly knocked him out, and Alain destroyed Markus. Markus is tough, but even the tough get knocked out in the second round.”
Allen is in a difficult position. The committed teammate of reigning featherweight champion Demarte Pena, both men have made it clear that they will not fight each other, leaving Allen craving higher level opponents but unable to fight them as a victory will set him up for a title shot.
