3 Days To African MMA’s Greattest Battle

Ioannou vs. Madge, June 27

24 June 2013

EFC AFRICA – Extreme Fighting Championship – 3 Days To African MMA’s Greattest Battle

Johannesburg (South Africa) - It’s only three days until Costa Ioannou, the most dominant champion in EFC AFRICA history defends his lightweight belt against the man dubbed as the future of the lightweight division; Don Madge. This is a fight that has generated interest like no other before it. This is the biggest fight to ever be fought on African soil.

Costa Ioannou exploded onto the EFC AFRICA stage with one of the most incredible battles ever seen. Over three rounds he and the recently returned Brendan Katz put on an MMA display that shattered all previous experiences of what was possible, together they redefined the limits that men could push themselves to in the hexagon. In one night Ioannou marked himself as a fighter above all others.

Just on a year ago Don Madge and Leon Mynhardt faced each other in Cape Town. That night Madge did the same as what Ioannou achieved two years before; he redefined what was known with a devastating, brutal display of skill. That fight continues to echo. It is a milestone fight that revealed Madge as the future of the lightweight division, despite his loss. Like Ioannou, everything changed when he appeared.

If Madge lands a head kick, the fight will open. If Ioannou shoots and Madge defends successfully, the game will be on. If Ioannou takes Madge down but Madge gets back to his feet the arena will erupt. This battle is between the best grappler and the best striker on the continent but it’s also a battle where each has the potential to match the other. It’s a battle where every moment will be massive.

Those at Carnival City, Johannesburg, will witness a turning point in African MMA. Either Ioannou will cement himself, beyond all doubt, as the greatest champion the continent has seen, unbeatable, or the division will be turned on its head with the greatest upset in African MMA history. No matter which way the fight goes, it’s going to be incredible.

“I don’t train to shoot once,” Ioannou has been quoted as saying, “I shoot to put someone on their back. I keep going until he goes down.”

“I’m not intimidated by him or his fans,” Madge has replied. “I’m going to hurt him… He’s never faced anything like me… The belt is coming to Cape Town.”

EFC AFRICA 20, presented by MusclePharm, explodes across televisions the world over on June 27. All 13 bouts can be seen live at Carnival City and at Nu Metro cinemas throughout South Africa.
