“We Are Asking Martin, Keep It Standing”
Opperman prepares for van Staden at EFC AFRICA 19
22 March 2013
Johannesburg (South Africa) - On the night of April 19 EFC AFRICA welterweight champion Michiel Opperman will defend his title against challenger Martin ‘The Punisher’ van Staden. In this just released video EFC AFRICA takes an inside look at Opperman’s training camp, and reveals a surprising, standing and banging intention.
“We don’t rate Martin as a stand-up fighter,” says Opperman’s coach, Morne Visser. “We are asking [him], keep it standing.”
Opperman is a decorated striker with numerous Kyukoshin Karate titles, a fighter who has only recently discovered a submissions arsenal but has used it to devastating effect. All of his EFC AFRICA appearances have been won by submission, as was the champion’s belt he now wears.
“His only weapon is his right hand,” says Opperman. “As long as I keep my left up and my chin tucked, I’m safe.”
Whether the Opperman camp’s game plan is a ruse or real strategy, April 19 promises a total onslaught from these two uncompromising men.
“It’s about the gold around [my] waist,” says Opperman. “When I step in the cage I want to completely destroy my opponent… Nothing else matters. Just the gold around [my] waist.”
