The Rise Of The Bantamweights

Third bantamweight bout to be staged at EFC AFRICA 20

07 May 2013

EFC AFRICA – Extreme Fighting Championship – The Rise Of The Bantamweights

Johannesburg (South Africa) - At EFC AFRICA 20 Charlie Weyer is to face newcomer Craig ‘Nemo’ Ninow in the organisation’s third bantamweight bout, a huge step forward in a champion being heralded for the division.

“The bantamweight division is shaping up to be the most dynamic of them all,” says EFC AFRICA matchmaker Graeme Cartmell. “The reality is these guys have been out there for a long time, honing their skills at other promotions, waiting for the chance to compete on a bigger stage. Now that the chance is here they’re bringing huge experience and ability. We’re looking to hold our first bantamweight title fight before the end of the year.”

The EFC AFRICA bantamweight division opened at EFC AFRICA 18 with a bout between Donnovan Wilken and Charlie Weyer, and saw action again at EFC AFRICA 19 with Donnovan Wilken taking on debutant Nkazimulo Zulu. EFC AFRICA 20 sees the third bout to be staged and the introduction of the EFC AFRICA’s fourth bantamweight signing in Ninow.

‘Craig is a huge prospect,’ says Cartmell. “He’s just the kind of athlete that typifies this growing division. A guy with a big amateur and pro record behind him (4-0 amateur, 5-3 pro), a solid skill set coming from the Morne Swanepoel stable, and the heart to put on a show. In the bout between Weyer and Ninow I’m looking forward to seeing a fast paced match-up and huge possibilities for the future.”

“I’m very excited,” says Ninow of his opportunity. “I turned pro over two years ago and this is all I’ve been working for. I wanted to try and make featherweight but I’m too light. This is the place I need to be.” “All I know of Charlie [Weyer] is what I’ve seen from his EFC fights,” he adds. “He’s got fast hands, a good boxer, but I’m an all-round MMA athlete. That’s what I’m going to bring.”

EFC AFRICA 20, presented by MusclePharm, takes place at the Carnival City Big Top Arena on 27 June 2013. Tickets on sale now at www.computicket.com. Tickets for the live broadcast to Nu Metro Cinemas available soon at www.numetro.com.
