Katz VS. Nienaber For Top FW Spot
28 February 2014
Johannesburg (South Africa) - At last night’s EFC AFRICA 27 post-event press conference an opponent for featherweight number one contender Boyd Allen was revealed. It was also confirmed that Vandam Mbuyi and Brendon Groenewald would get an immediate rematch, after their controversial bout at the EFC 27 event.
EFC AFRICA president Cairo Howarth announced that Allen will face the winner between featherweight top contenders Brendon Katz and Barend Nienaber. This bout is scheduled to take place at EFC AFRICA 29, May 01. A date for the fight for the now vacant featherweight title has yet to be set.
Katz is a well-known EFC AFRICA figure. After defeating Mark Jones at EFC AFRICA 04 he left African shores to fight internationally, and returned to face Gareth Buirski in September last year. Katz has a pro MMA record of 6-2.
With a pro MMA record of 9-1 Nienaber brings big experience to his title shot. He is currently on an eight fight win streak, most recently having defeated Kanyeba Anicet and Amos Hlatswayo in the EFC AFRICA Hexagon.
The EFC AFRICA featherweight title became vacant when undefeated former champion Demarte Pena relinquished it last week, in order to make the drop to bantamweight.
Mbuyi and Groenewald’s bout last night ended controversially when Mbuyi was disqualified for striking the back of Groenewald’s head. The blow came directly after an accidental groin strike by Mbuyi, and the referee have called a time out for it.
Their second face-off has been penciled for next month’s March 27 event, subject to final confirmation.
