Frederich ‘Ninja’ Naumann before facing Dallas Jakobi, EFC AFRICA 22

Johannesburg (South Africa) - Frederich ‘Ninja’ Naumann ended 2013, his debut year, undefeated. He added to that two submission of the night, a submission of the year and one knock out of the night awards. On February 27 he challenges the legend, Leon ‘Iron Lion’ Mynhardt, for his lightweight belt. In a telephone interview given this morning Naumann broke down the fight. Here are the thoughts of the Ninja, unedited, topic by topic.

Gas Tank

“The last couple of weeks I’ve done a lot of skipping, road work, bag work and cross fit. Leon is fit. In his last fight he went five rounds. I’ve never seen him gas, I’ve never seen him get tired. The main thing for me is to get fit. I will be fit. I won’t gas.”

“My plan is to take him on, full-on toe-to-toe stand up. I’ve got the reach advantage, I believe I’ve got the speed advantage, I believe I have the skills to dominate his standup. I’m going to use my legs. I’m going to attack him with everything I’ve got. I’m going to set a high pace, that’s the plan from the beginning. If it doesn’t work, if I can’t knock him out or down standing, or if he injures me, then I will take him down.”

“My Jits is there. It’s a lot better than his. Against Don I could see that he’s worked on his takedown defense, but the real Jits wasn’t there for me. There were no proper submission attempts, he only tried a Kimura once or twice. He escaped a few submissions, but there wasn’t anything impressive for me. If he goes down I will finish him, that I can promise you. I will do what Don couldn’t, and the same goes for the standup.”

“I hit harder than Don Madge. Don has good technique, he can move and he can punch but I have more power behind my punches. That’s what I believe. Don and I have more or less the same reach advantage. If you look at their first fight in the first round Don slaughtered him standing. But the thing about Leon is if you let him fight off the front foot he’s going to damage you. You need to pressure him. He must back up the whole time. If you pressure him there are holes in his game.”

Standing & Banging

“I believe Leon will keep it standing because he doesn’t have respect for my standup. I’ve heard him say that he thinks there are a lot of holes in my standup. So I think he’s going to go out and just bang. He’s working his wrestling for his takedown defense. He’s thinking that he’s not going to be able to finish me in the first two, so he’s planning to put me in the deep water. In the fourth or fifth he’s going to try and knock me down and finish me. He’ll keep it standing. I don’t think he wants to go down with me.”

“I’ve never seen Leon go for a takedown. He got a submission against Alex Cheboub but that was luck. Leon’s only plan is to go out and stand and bang. He doesn’t care how much damage he takes, he just wants to stand and bang. That’s all he knows, that’s what he’s going to do with me, but I’m going to fight smart.”

The Strike Zone

“I mustn’t stand in the strike zone with Leon. If he throws a punch I should get out of the way. I don’t want to stand toe-to-toe and take his shots, I don’t want to get hooked by him. I want him to miss me. I’m going to pressure him, pressure him then if he punches I’m going to back down, a little bit, and then attack.”

“He hits hard. But it looks like he telegraphs his shots. You can see them coming because he wants to knock you out with every single punch. Every punch is thrown with 100% power.”

Mind Games

“If he knows what my tactics are it’s actually better for me. It doesn’t make a difference what his game plan is, my focus is my plan. But with Leon it doesn’t matter anyway. He wants to stand with me. What I’m saying now is exactly what he wants to hear. I want people to know that this is my plan. Because when I succeed then I get respect as well.”

“I am a man of my word. When I say something I do it. I don’t need tricks. I’m going to go out there and attack him with everything I’ve got. There will be feet, knees, elbows, fists flying everywhere. I am going to attack him ruthlessly.”

“I’m going to finish the fight within two rounds. If I don’t drop him quickly with the fists I’m going to take him down and finish him, before the end of the second round. That is not a wish, that is my plan, and I’ll do it. That’s what I’ve been working for for five months. That is what’s going to happen.”

“Within my first two rounds is when I’m most dangerous. I’m not going to play with him. I’m not going to let him get into that comfortable zone that he’s famous for. I’m going to finish him before that happens. He’s said that he’s changing that, but that’s the way Leon Mynhardt fights. That’s how he is. I don’t think he’s going to be able to change that now.”

“I’ve been following him since 2001. I used to see pictures of him back then as a K1 fighter and champion. It’s an honour to fight him, but for me it’s more about the test. I want to test myself against him. I’m fighting a human being. I need to fight him.”
