Johannesburg (South Africa) – Five athletes on the EFC AFRICA 14 fight card have worn the most coveted belt in African MMA, the EFC AFRICA championship belt. Costa Ioannou and Demarte Pena are current champions, while Adam Speechly, Garreth McLellan and Wentzel Nel are former champions. With such high calibre contenders on the bill, EFC AFRICA 14 promises to be the best fight night yet!
Costa Ioannou – Current lightweight champion, Ioannou is a Greek South African and one of the most popular athletes at EFC AFRICA. Ioannou became champion at EFC AFRICA 08 by submitting Wentzel Nel in round one and successfully defended his title against Alex Cheboub at EFC AFRICA 11 by submission in round three. Ioannou fights out of Fight Fit Militia and Crazy Monkey Defence in Johannesburg.
Demarte Pena – Current featherweight champion, Pena is originally from Angola and is the first non-South African to hold an EFC AFRICA title. Pena became champion at EFC AFRICA 10 by defeating Leo Gloss after five rounds via unanimous decision. Pena fights out of Fight Fit Militia in Johannesburg.
Adam Speechly – Former welterweight champion, Speechly is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s best grapplers. Speechly became champion at EFC AFRICA 07 by submitting Nolan Swanepoel in round two. Speechly lost the title at EFC AFRICA 10 to Dallas Jakobi after five rounds via unanimous decision, and has now moved down a weight class to challenge Costa Ioannou for the lightweight title at EFC AFRICA 14. Speechly fights out of Smith’s Boxercise Gym in Johannesburg.
Garreth McLellan – Former middleweight champion, McLellan is EFC AFRICA’s most recognisable athlete due to the bushy blonde beard that he grows for each fight. McLellan became champion at EFC AFRICA 08 after submitting Jacques Joubert in the fourth round. McLellan lost the title at EFC AFRICA 12 to Jeremy Smith. McLellan fights out of Fight Fit Militia in Johannesburg.
Wentzel Nel – Former lightweight champion, Nel was the first athlete to ever become EFC AFRICA champion. Nel became champion at EFC AFRICA 03 by defeating Leo Gloss via first round knockout. Nel lost the title to Costa Ioannou at EFC AFRICA 08, and has now moved down a weight division to featherweight, where he hopes to once again work towards a title. Nel fights out of 10th Planet and Fit4Life in Durban.
