Costa Fires Final Warning Shot At EFC AFRICA 20 Weigh-In

Tempers flare ahead of tomorrow night

Don Madge (left) and Costa Ioannou face off at the EFC AFRICA 20 weigh-in

Johannesburg (South Africa) – The EFC AFRICA 20 weigh-in took place at 14H00 CAT today, with massive action entertaining the capacity crowd at Carnival City. “I saw in his eyes that this just got real for Don,” said a smiling champion Costa Ioannou after an explosive face-off with the lightweight challenger Don Madge. “Costa is coming,” he added, “and he knows it.”

The massively hyped Frederich Naumann vs Johan van Staden bout was the first to boil over with Van Staden pushing his head hard into his opponents. Naumann replied with some go-forward of his own prompting EFC AFRICA president Cairo Howarth to step between the two to prevent further upset. Fans can expect this fight to rumble tomorrow night.

Ricky Misholas took the chance to send a message to Ruan Potts, attempting to stare the former heavyweight champion down before applying some of his own head pressure. Potts responded with a devil’s grin and a push forward, setting these two up for an artillery barrage on Thursday.

Nothing topped the drama attached to the lightweight title fight face off, however, with Ioannou getting into the face of Madge, goading him after which Madge responded with a smile and the placing of his fist between them. Afterward Costa confirmed that he felt totally disrespected by Madge’s fans, and was looking forward to setting things straight on Thursday night.

Four athletes failed to make their required weight. Mathew Buirski came in at 1.35kg over the bantamweight limit, a financial compromise reached between the two camps allowing him to not drop further. Johan van Staden and Raymond Ahana each were 600g heavy. Naumann’s camp agreed to waive the 600g while Ahana had two hours to make the required weight, which he did. Tumelo Maphutha, already fighting at an agreed catch-weight of 86kg, was initially 1.2kg over the limit. He managed to drop 600g in an hour but refused to drop further. An angered McLellan said, “fine. I’ll fight him there, and I’ll hurt him even more.”
